The Rise and Fall of Ladino-Speaking Jews is a downloadable lecture series by Professor Devin Naar, chair of the Sephardic Studies Program at the University of Washington. Professor Naar traces the history of Sephardim from the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 to the establishment of Jewish communities in the eastern Mediterranean world. He explores the devastation wrought by the Holocaust and the experiences of Ladino-speaking Jews in the United States as they encountered Ashkenazi communities.

Devin E. Naar is the Isaac Alhadeff Professor in Sephardic Studies and associate professor of history at the University of Washington. His first book, Jewish Salonica: Between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece, was published by Stanford University Press in 2016 and won the 2016 National Jewish Book Award in the category of Research Based on Archival Material. Dr. Naar teaches courses in modern Jewish history; Jewish culture from antiquity until today; Sephardic history and culture; the history and memory of the Holocaust; and relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims in lands of the former Ottoman Empire. He has also spearheaded a project to collect, preserve and disseminate the rich Sephardic and Ladino historical, literary, and cultural heritage, creating the Sephardic Studies Digital Library and Archive, which is comprised of more than 1,500 artifacts, books, and letters collected from residents of the Seattle area and across the country.
